In this assignment, I had to design a poster about a problem advocating positive change. The problem I settled on before designing my poster was drug abuse, an ever-growing problem around the world due to the Fentanyl crisis. After deciding on an issue, I had to create a tagline for the poster that paired with my design. For this project, I initially believed that I would struggle to decide on an illustrative technique to focus on when designing my
poster, but after finding the work of Morgan Sorenson, I knew exactly what direction I wanted to go. Sorenson’s style is reminiscent of Art Deco illustration, and that was something I tried to remember while creating my poster, trying to utilize geometric shapes with dirty textures that looked like printing errors or wear and tear. While thinking of concepts for my poster design I stumbled upon the term ‘monkey on your back’ in recovery groups on the website Reddit. This is a term used to describe the burden of addiction and influenced all of my design.
